Pros

  • Established client with large userbase
  • Intuitive controls and easy to customize
  • Highly adjustable seed/leech ratios

Cons

  • Can pose a security risk (especially for novice users)
  • Due to nature of torrents, will slow internet connection

uTorrent (microTorrent) is a lightweight torrent downloader that has one of the longest track records in the industry.

In the world of torrents, there are many torrent downloaders. For good reason, torrent users seek out the clients that offer the most in-app security features and the fastest download speeds. All torrent clients bog down internet connections more than regular downloads because they rely on users to upload ("seed") content as well as download ("leech") content. microTorrent facilitates P2P transfers easily.

microTorrent recently switched to a "metro" type interface. It's very stylish and leaves little to be desired. It has easy to access controls and speeds. However, it doesn't offer average users much in terms of security. There have been numerous reports over the years of microTorrent users being infected due to malicious blocks. It's hard to confirm these reports or establish the exact source of any infection, but it's completely possible.

There is a lot of "under the hood" tuning that's possible for any user. microTorrent is designed for the average consumer but has the options for the most advanced torrent power user. It does have a proxy option, but a Virtual Private Network (VPN) connection would be a much more secure system to use to avoid censorship and identification.

Overall, uTorrent is a stable piece of software and is highly respected in the industry. It may not be for everyone, but as long as you do a bit of research and security before use, it will likely work out.
